Former Supreme Court Judge Syed Mansoor Ali Shah Resumes Legal Practice

Former Supreme Court judge Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah has formally announced the start of his legal practice, focusing on international and domestic arbitration, mediation, and strategic legal consultancy, alongside continued engagement in legal education. He resigned from the Supreme Court on November 13, 2025, citing constitutional principle, judicial independence, and fidelity to the rule of law.

Justice Shah, who authored over 450 reported judgments and decided more than 5,000 cases, was in line to become Chief Justice of Pakistan before changes to judicial seniority under the 26th Constitutional Amendment. He is currently a Distinguished Professor at LUMS and is scheduled to teach at Yale Law School and the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School. His return to practice has drawn mixed reactions within the legal community, reflecting ongoing debate over judicial independence and constitutional reform in Pakistan.
